What’s Black and White and Directs you to a Website?

What are those funny little bar codes in the corner of just about everything these days that people point their smartphones at?

When I first saw these little codes appearing they puzzled me. Didn’t they use to be on the packets of products at the supermarket?

Yes they did. In fact, these funny little QR codes (Quick Response) were originally devised to be used in the automotive industry. Quickly they became wide-spread for industrial use, but now everyone has a bar code scanner in his or her back pocket or purse in the form of a smart phone. Part of our WordPress consulting services is recommending the use of QR codes to businesses that could quickly and easily benefit from their use.

Smartphone technology set the wheels in motion for QR codes to become used in mainstream advertising campaigns. Now a consumer does not have to type in a company’s website. All they do is download a QR code reader app on their mobile device, point it at a QR code, and then bang! they are directed to the company’s website.

This video provides an interesting look at how QR codes work and all the interesting QR codes found on the streets of New York.

Some QR codes are regular black and white while others are a little more ornate. Now it is possible to add graphics and logos in the QR code itself in just a few minutes.

Take a look and see how easy it is to customize a QR code using photoshop.

So what is the big appeal of QR codes?

Well, for one they are easy and fun to use. As the first video above demonstrates, a randomly placed QR code provides some intrigue.

A potential client may be walking on the street, see, it, scan it, and be interested in the product or service offered.

Another big bonus to having a QR code is that if a customer sees an advertisement and wants to remember the website and has nothing to write the information down, all they have to do is point and shoot and save the website for later.

The only downfall to QR codes is that not everyone has a smart phone so they are unable to scan. This being said, there is a steady increase of people using smartphones in the United States.
